 ABOUT IDSK


The Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK) was promoted in 2002 by the Government of West Bengal as an autonomous centre of excellence in social sciences. It is a society with an autonomous governing body with one of the most eminent historians in India, Professor Irfan Habib as President and Professor Amiya Kumar Bagchi as Director. It has a Governing Council which represents the Vice-Chancellors of two leading Universities in West Bengal, namely Calcutta University and Jadavpur University. The Governing Council also includes such eminent academics as Professor Nirmal Chandra, Professor Suranjan Das, Professor V.K. Ramachandran and Professor Malini Bhattacharya as its members.

IDSK is devoted to advanced academic research and informed policy advice in the areas of literacy, education, health, women, employment, technology, communication, human sciences and economic development. Other programmes include training of research scholars in the social sciences working towards a Ph.D. The Institute is committed to the dissemination of its research findings through workshops, seminars, publications in the media, and other public counselling and education programmes.

IDSK has carried out a field survey based research programme on literacy and primary education in West Bengal, some results of which have been published as Working Papers. It has also completed a research project on Public Health, Nutrition and Medicine.It has carried out a study of in-service training programmes under DPEP in five districts of West Bengal.It has hosted interns of the of the UNICEF studying problems of dissemination of vaccines. In collaboration with the University of Calcutta, it has initiated a multi-disciplinary course on M.Phil in Development Studies. With funding from Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung,Berlin, it has been carrying out a programme on women and media in collaboration with women's studies centres in West Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Uttaranchal. In collaboration with Pratichi Trust (India) it has held interactive sessions with workers' organizations in education and health care.It has organized several national and international conferences such as 'Narratives of Development','Global Finance and Integration with Developing Economies with Special Reference to India' and so on.
